In My Bath, and Author interview
Beth Bence Reinke, the author of In My Bath has a lovely interview posted here on Beverly Stowe McClure's Blog. I think you will really enjoy how she arrived at the story and the inspirations that helped her create such a winning work.
I was pleased to have been chosen to illustrate her story. The images she describes can only contribute more fun to bathtime.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY ~ Propagate
When I think of Propagate I have only to look around my studio and see the endless sketches, drawings, printouts and paintings that share my workspace. I say "share" because when I create a character it becomes a part of my studio family. I have to printout all the pages to see if they are working. More than that , however, I need to keep that family near me while I work. The components of the current book adorn the many bulletin boards in my studio. They are also a form of propagation as I have to keep adding more to extend the surfaces for display.Having finished a book with many characters I sent it off to the publisher like a mom sending a child off to the first day of school. With the files sent off I cleared the bulletin boards. Seeing them empty will not do, so now they are once again in propagation mode for the current project.
Since I cannot, for copyright reasons share that photo, I will post one small image from the book, that shows the propagation of a crowd drawn into a park by the sweet sounds of a little boy playing his harmonica. And I realize it is very small, but consider this, it is one of 30 printouts that hung in my studio as I worked to create this family of friends.

Old people in old places
This is one I am working on.. the finish will be pen and ink and maybe a bit of digital. Right now I am in the exploration stage, but loving the adventure I am able to create in this musty old library.

I love the idea of old books, old libraries, and older people who still love to read and explore.
Stella is one of those avid readers. She belongs to three separate book clubs and is the host of an online bookblogger club. Her friend Jerome, however is rather a loner. He loves to haunt the rare bookshelves for some timeless novel or historic fiction. Uh oh.... looks like he dropped something.
Never mind.. Stella will catch it. Hmmmmmmm... but what will she find and what will she do next?

Spring Mailer
I had already sent out Spring postcards, but decided I needed to send out a flyer to key prospects. The mailer is two sided. One side has a brief resume and book and client list, and the other is a composite image from many illustrations. I decided to add some interest to the envelope as well.

I also designed an envelope for the separate mailers I will be sending to Magazine publishers.

LET YOUR IMAGINATION BE YOUR GUIDE
I always like to let my imagination take over when I am illustrating. After all if you can think it or dream it you can illustrate it. Well, most of the time.
This little guy was just asking for a place to be:
So I gave him a new home, with a bit of a twist. I really love books, but my favorites have always been picture books. So what if all the pictures decided to leave the books and look for new homes? Yikes! What a predicament.
This is where little Jackson is now...waiting to meet some new friends.

All About the Books ~ What about YOURS!

Have you illustrated ( or written and illustrated) some books you would like to share?
My Bookpage has grown over the past four years. I have been fortunate to work with some wonderful authors and small press publishers as well as some fantastic educational publishers.
Since most of the marketing and press is done by the publishers I need to check in once in a while to see what is happening with the books. Some have received awards, good reviews and wonderful articles in newspapers. But what I am most proud of is the way children react to them. I love seeing their faces as they look at my illustrations and read the charming stories or listen to me read the stories.
It must be the same for so many illustrators that are devoted to creating for children. Do you have a story to tell? Do children inspire and encourage your art? Post your response, and let others know how your illustrations can bring a smile or a tear to those who view them.
If you are a blogger, the link to your name will bring people to your site so they can view your work. Once there they can follow other links you may have to your personal website and beyond.

The Little Book That Could~!

A surprise this morning in my email, came from the publisher of the book I illustrated , THE ADVENTURES OF CALI.
Written by Michle Lallouz Fisher, it is a story of discovery, friendship and growth that will make you smile and perhaps bring a tear to your eye.
YES ! Little CALI made the cover of Publishers Weekly! Which one is she? Just look for the brightly colored cheerful book cover.
